Toronto Rallies for Six Nations Land Defenders

From Rising Tide Toronto

On Saturday, September 12th, hundreds of people gathered at the Ministry of Indigenous Affairs Ontario to oppose the police violence against, and criminalization of, Six Nations Land Defenders at 1492 Land Back Lane. The group has been re-occupying their traditional land in Caledonia for 57 days to protect it from a proposed housing development.

At the rally, we heard from Courtney Skye, a researcher at Ryerson University’s Yellowhead Institute who was arrested and charged for visiting the site, on the way to meet another researcher after having left the camp. We were also lucky to have Russell Diabo, a member of the Mohawk Nation at Kahnawake and First Nations Policy Analyst, speak to the crowd about land claims.

We did a mass calling to the Ontario Minister of Indigenous Affairs, Greg Rickford, demanding that he respect Indigenous Land Defenders, Indigenous land, and traditional decision-making processes. If you missed the rally you can still call him on Monday and leave a message in solidarity with the Land Defenders: 416-326-4740.

A group also left a large message on the street for Minister Rickford to see on Monday morning.
