Anonymous Submission to North Shore Counter-Info Here in Kingston, the September 20th anti-trans demonstration was a bit larger than expected but still did not manage to outnumber the crowd who showed up to counter-protest in solidarity with trans youth and in support of access to gender affirming care as well as open and inclusive 2SLGBTQIA+ education in schools. From the counter-protest organizers: The protestors are upset about 2SLGBTQIA+ inclusive education, Read More …

Standing Ground on Our Back Foot: A Look at September 20th Counter-Protests in Hamilton and Guelph

September 20th, 2023, saw coordinated protests billed as the “1 Million March 4 Kids” take place at various school boards, city halls and other such locations across Canada and a bit of the U.S. They were spurred on by the Hands Off Our Kids organization. HOOK, under the guise of “protecting children” and their “rights,” and couching itself in the language of Liberal inclusiveness, seeks to eliminate what they have referred to as “LGBTQ+ ideology” from schools. This article does not exist to defend any government institution or politician: its purpose – like our presence at the counter-protests – is to defend queer existence and marginalized communities from the creeping tide of hate and opportunistic fascism. We are two Hamilton queers who put ourselves in the midst of the action in Guelph and in Hamilton, at different stages. We, Ripley and E.D., have set out here to provide our on-the-ground perspectives on the protesters, what took place in both cities, as well as on what comes next. Read More …

Ottawa: June 9th Community Defence Reportback

On a Friday morning in June, something like 200 fascists descended upon Broadview and Carling in suburban ottawa. By the time they’d formed up, a blockade of defenders had already taken the north side of the intersection. Over the next several hours, those two large contingents split into smaller blockades spanning several blocks, with a series of confrontations that ended in around 400 defenders completely corralling the fascists off. Renfrew Pride Defence Reportback

On November 25, around 30 people rallied outside a Catholic high school in Renfrew, Ontario, against trans girls using the women’s washroom. The poster for the event had the logos for Freedom Fighters Canada, Save Canada, and Ontario Party, a few of the many groups that have come from the anti-mandate movement. The organizer’s own social media also makes it clear that he’s familiar and integrated with the far-right ecosystem of the Ottawa occupation. Read More …

Hamilton Queer Community Defence Reportback

On November 24, people in Hamilton showed up to support a drag storytime event after word spread online that haters would be coming to protest it. Some of the apparent organizers of the event emerged from the ‘freedom convoy’ movement but lately seem to have been focusing on queer/trans-related issues, especially those concerning kids.  Read More …

Response from The Tower to the “Pride in Hamilton” Report: We Want a World Without Cops, Not Another Investigation

The independent report into policing around the Pride Hamilton 2019 festival was released Monday. Entitled “Pride in Hamilton” and carried out by lawyer Scott Bergman, it comes almost a year after the far-right attack on Pride and in the middle of a wave of demonstrations against police across the continent. It’s common following situations of particularly awful police behaviour for there to be a push for an independent review, and this report is a great example of why any hopes placed in them are so often in vain. Its primary goal is to have the Hamilton police get better at community policing, meaning controlling from within, and counterinsurgency, meaning pacifying social movements. They don’t come right out and say this though, so our hope here is to tease out those threads. Read More …
