How to defend yourself during a police interrogation

Français Deutsch An interrogation is not a harmonious exchange between two individuals. It’s a conflict. And in this conflict, our ignorance is our strength. Ignorance of the meaning of police work, ignorance of the manipulative techniques used, ignorance of the legal framework and, last but not least, ignorance of our means of defence. In response to this observation, this book is intended as a tool for self-defense against police interrogation Read More …

Nothing but dead ends: How the complaints process protects the Ottawa police

Police misconduct and violence are increasingly dominating news headlines. With calls to disarm, defund, and abolish police forces, we’re also seeing inspiring efforts to fundamentally transform how people respond to harm and keep each other safe. For now, however, if you’ve been mistreated by the police in Ottawa, your main recourse is to file a complaint through established complaints procedures. These complaints are one of the few ways we can gain information about the problematic behaviour of cops and how the Ottawa Police Service (OPS) responds to such behaviour. Read More …

Peaceful Protest, Outside Agitators, and the State: A Letter to BIPOC Comrades

It’s been a week of intensity nearly unknown in our lifetimes. I, like many of you, have been glued to my phone for updates from the streets. I watched in both horror and unbridaled joy at the images of burning cop cars and precincts, the gutted Targets and Footlockers. Antagonism not tempered by liberal notions of “peace” or “civility”. But also horror at the images of the police shooting medics with “less lethal weapons” at close range, or shoving an old man  backwards and walking by him without notice as he convulses on the ground. I watched. I beared witness. I allowed myself to feel the seething anger. Read More …

Fuck the Police for Ever: Arrested for Lawn Signs

Anonymous Submission to North Shore Counter-Info Let me tell you a funny story. On Friday June 28, 2019 in the early afternoon I was getting excited for a queer dance party that would soon take over the streets of Hamilton; one more action showcasing queer resilience and resistance here in Hamilton, despite police repression.  I was telling my friend about is as we drove across town, not even a little Read More …

Hamilton Police PR Stunt met with Counter-Demo

Police are doing “Coffee With a Cop” events across the region, including in Chatham-Kent on May 22 or Windsor on May 30. They’ve been happening in Toronto and Niagara too. Holding a “Coffee Without Cops” event outside is an easy way to spoil their party and make space to critique the role police play in society as well as specific abuses.

Perhaps the easiest question ever asked: “Would you like your coffee with or without cops?” “Coffee with a Cop,” a public relations event by Hamilton Police, found itself competing for attention with “Coffee without Cops.” Read More …
