From Rising Tide Toronto Photos from Porcupine Warriors Many hundreds of people gathered at Yonge & Dundas Square yesterday (Friday, October 1st) to show solidarity with Wet’suwet’en Land Defenders who are blocking a drilling site of the Coastal GasLink Pipeline on their territory and are under attack by the RCMP. CGL and TC Energy off Wet’suwet’en land!
A few shots taken a week or two after an experimental exercise in the quaint little picturesque mountain town of Smithers (glad to see most of the posters stayed up!). This little hamlet/colony happens to be located in one of two yintah’s (territories) of the Cas Yikh (Grizzly Bear) – part of the Gidumten Clan of the Wetsuweten – the other Cas Yikh yintah is where the Gidumt’en Checkpoint kicked of the “shutdowncanada” movement with two years of winter blockades.
It has been almost one year since the call went out for peoples across so called canada for solidarity; to respect Wet’suwet’en laws and jurisdiction to our lands and to fight together against colonization, industrial genocide, and to stop CGL and RCMP from invading our yintah.
As we asserted full control over access to our yintah and brought industry to a halt, many others rose up with us. From large demonstrations to rail blockades to clandestine sabotages against the infrastructures of colonization, many nations, groups and people fought alongside us. It’s been almost a year since the wave of blockades in solidarity with Wet’suwet’en land defenders known as Shut Down Canada. Since then, there has been no shortage of urgent issues, and public attention has moved on. However, for both those on the front lines and those still facing charges, moving on has not been an option.

In the early morning of Friday, March 13th, 2020, we took part in an act of defiance and solidarity with the Wet’suwet’en. Inspired by recent actions in the GTA, we setup a ghost blockade along the railway tracks just outside of Edmonton. It was cold, so we gave the ghosts a fire to keep them warm. CN was alerted. In response to the continued colonialist occupation of Wet’suwet’en land by government, police, and extractive industry, some settler accomplices dropped a banner during rush hour over highway 406 in so called St. Catharines.
We support the autonomy and self determination of indigenous peoples on Turtle Island and abroad, who are leading the struggles against colonialism, environmental destruction, and dispossession.
With this small gesture of solidarity , we hope to inspire others in the Region to stand with land defenders in Wet’suwet’en and beyond, and remind the forces of the settler state that despite the media bamboozle, this struggle is still very much alive. Read More …
On Wednesday March 11, hours before the student walkout for Wet’suwet’en, fellow supporters continued to disrupt the Canadian economy by holding “Ghost Blockades” at the time of the morning commute. Activists in solidarity with the Wet’suwet’en and other Indigenous Land Defenders have planted harmless signals on train tracks in various parts of the GTA, forcing rail traffic to halt while officials investigate. Trains were stopped, but this time there were no visible activists on the tracks for the police to arrest and intimidate. As police forces escalate their responses to peaceful demonstrations on rails, land defenders and allies are finding ways to send their message without risking police aggression. Railway police and other workers will need to investigate each blockade to deem the tracks safe for further traffic. We wanted to share some considerations for organizing a rail blockade so that different groups can easily take up the tactic.
** It is important to note that this is for folks who want to host a PUBLIC blockade. Any sabotage or other activities that might lead to more serious charges should be done by your affinity group in secret. Solidarity with the sabotagers!
