We are calling for actions on October 3rd that focus on the sprawling infrastructure of Canada’s immigration detention system.

Hamilton: Cedar is out!

UPDATE: Cedar has been out for a couple now and is doing well. She hasn’t been able to shed any light on why she was released though, she only found out about it the day before, having received no official communication after the parole hearing, not even a copy of the ruling. Its good that sometimes we get nice surprises. They’re slowly catching up on everything that’s been happening and want to pass on so much gratitude for the support, solidarity with all the pride defenders charged (drop the charges!), and all those still locked up are big in their thoughts. As good as it is to be out, its hard to leave people behind in there, and though we celebrate that our friend is safe, we try to remember as well the violence faced by other queers, especially queers of colour, and so many others. Looking at the police service board meeting this week and the super soft bail release for the only person who has been arrested for assaulting folks at Pride, it is clearer than ever that the cops and courts will never protect us and we need to continue to build towards autonomy without them. Camp Chaos Gays Farewell Statement

For 3 days last weekend the chaos queers held an encampment at city hall that was more inclusive, productive, and community-centred space than the last 3 years of bureaucratic work going on inside.

We are some of the same queers Mayor Fred has called fake and tried to label as agitators; some of the same ones police have tried criminalizing. We are rebel queers; still resisting. Still loud. Always political. Still seeking and creating alternatives to the status quo. Who see what happened at Pride as a symptom of an ongoing issue in this city (and beyond) and a flashpoint; not a one-off event. On the 50th anniversary of Stonewall and on the Day of Action that was called in support of pride defenders, Hamilton Police have arrested two additional people. This Is Why You Weren’t Invited: Hamilton Police Target Queers Fighting Back

Starting yesterday evening and into today Hamilton Police Services (HPS) have begun to harass those who were involved in the events that took place at Hamilton Pride.[1] We are not referring to the hateful and exceedingly aggressive bigots who attacked folks, but those who defended themselves and other queers at Pride. As the police talk about “imminent arrests”[2], they are not targeting (or at least not exclusively targeting) the far-right chauvinists who instigated a fight, but those queers from the community who faced the brunt of their violence. HPS have shown up to multiple houses where known queer anarchists live, asking for people suspected to have been involved in the incident. In unmarked cars and plain clothes; in police cruisers and full uniform, Hamilton Police are threatening and clearly trying to intimidate those who were attacked. They’ve banged on doors and windows, camped out on front porches, and even surrounded and trapped a person in their driveway as they attempted to leave their house. The police certainly are not on our side and they are most definitely not out to “protect us”. We share this text so that others in the community can show their support and solidarity, and put pressure on the police and city to drop this attempt at targeting brave people who stood up for all of us last weekend. Announcing the 2019 Toronto Anarchist Bookfair!

We are excited to announce the return of the Toronto Anarchist Bookfair! The 2019 Bookfair will take place September 28 at the Centre for Social Innovation – Annex, on the traditional territories of the Anishnaabe, Haudenosaunee and Huron-Wendat peoples. The Bookfair will be a space for everyone from experienced organizers to those simply curious about anarchism to share ideas and information, develop skills, and build the community capacity to create a world that aligns with our anarchist aspirations. There will be space to explore anarchist history and ideas, as well as their application to grassroots organizing and ongoing struggles. The Bookfair will include workshops, info tables, book sellers and social events. This is an accessible space that aims to centre BIPOC and other marginalized voices. Read More …
