Queer Ninjas Take Back Our Flags

Submitted anonymously to North Shore The rumours are true and the loot is ours. Last Thursday (June 20), under the cover of night, a fearless team of Queer Ninjas, using Trans-Batman-grade suction cups and Super Lesbionic Wonder Woman lassoes, scaled the clammy, heaving walls of Hamilton’s City Hall and reclaimed our rightful property. Our highly skilled infiltrators easily pierced the fortress of servanthood, dismantling the two centre flag poles and Read More …

Kingston Pride and Solidarity with Queers Against Police

This year at Kingston Pride, a small group of people gathered with signs that read “STONEWALL WAS A RIOT” and “NO PRIDE IN IMPERIALISM, NO PRIDE IN POLICE,” a black flag and flyers. We weaved through the parade, handing out flyers about why the military and cops weren’t welcome at Pride and expressing solidarity with racialized people, indigenous folks, migrants and poor folks who – like LGBTQ+ folks – experience brutal violence at the hands of Canada’s police and military on this territory and abroad. Legal Aid Board Chair Serves Landlord Class

Last week Legal Aid Ontario (LAO) made front page news when it announced a major attack on Parkdale, cutting 45% of its funding to Parkdale Community Legal Services (PCLS). What wasn’t reported was LAO’s Board Chair Charles Harnick’s connections to Toronto real estate interests. We think they go a long way to explaining the decision to target PCLS.  Read More …

This Is Why You Weren’t Invited: Hamilton Police Target Queers Fighting Back

Starting yesterday evening and into today Hamilton Police Services (HPS) have begun to harass those who were involved in the events that took place at Hamilton Pride.[1] We are not referring to the hateful and exceedingly aggressive bigots who attacked folks, but those who defended themselves and other queers at Pride. As the police talk about “imminent arrests”[2], they are not targeting (or at least not exclusively targeting) the far-right chauvinists who instigated a fight, but those queers from the community who faced the brunt of their violence. HPS have shown up to multiple houses where known queer anarchists live, asking for people suspected to have been involved in the incident. In unmarked cars and plain clothes; in police cruisers and full uniform, Hamilton Police are threatening and clearly trying to intimidate those who were attacked. They’ve banged on doors and windows, camped out on front porches, and even surrounded and trapped a person in their driveway as they attempted to leave their house. The police certainly are not on our side and they are most definitely not out to “protect us”. We share this text so that others in the community can show their support and solidarity, and put pressure on the police and city to drop this attempt at targeting brave people who stood up for all of us last weekend. Hamilton Pride 2019 Reportback

Submitted anonymously to North Shore June 15, 2019: By 2pm the group of bible-thumping homophobes and white nationalists who had crashed pride were escorted out of the park by an ensemble of late-to-the-party cops and a boisterous crowd of jeering queers. Their visit to Hamilton Pride 2019 lasted just under an hour, and was filled with some of the most confrontational behavior we’ve seen from these people yet. By the Read More …

The Raptors Riot That Wasn’t: Notes on a near-miss

I like riots, they’re pretty much my favourite thing. My very favourite is riots whose common feeling is rooted in overcoming an injustice, something with a bit of content. But even stupid riots are fun, and I find them worthwhile, even if they don’t have more content than playing basketball with your friends in the park.

I was hoping for a stupid riot when the Raptors won the NBA final. Yes, it’s Toronto, an incredibly dull and pacified place, but still. So on game 6 of the series, a crew of friends and I came in from out of town. With the exception of one pal who has been a Raptors fan for years and was excitedly following the score on her phone, the rest of us don’t pay any attention and didn’t mind not seeing even a single play of the final game. With our knock-off Giant Tiger Raptors gear and multiple layers of clothes, we spent the last minutes of the game eavesdropping on police radio conversations and watching the public order cops deploy to try to figure out what might happen next.
